This library was founded in 1947 and taken over by the Municipality in 1965. It was affiliated to the Nepal National Library as the Eastern Development Regional Library in 1998. A lending service has now been restarted and various programmes are organised. A children’s library has been opened on the lower floor of the same building, with support from UNICEF.

Central Development Region

Nepal National Library

Government of Nepal purchased the entire collection of Royal Priest Pundit Hem Raj Pandey in 1956 and merged with the collection of Central Secretariat Library and named Nepal National Library (NNL) in 1957 January 2. At present the library has around 84,000 volumes of books, journals and other materials in different languages.

Western Development Region

POKHARA PUBLIC LIBRARY

This was the first of the Regional Libraries to be affiliated to the Nepal National Library, in 1995. The Municipality provides the building and two library staff, and the library is managed by an energetic team of volunteer Executive Committee members. The library collections are being built up and there are currently about 4000 books. Sixty-five newspapers and magazines are regularly being received and about 100 readers visit the library each day. The library is centrally located in Mahendrapool.
With support from DANIDA through UNESCO, the Pokhara Public Library is a centre for a Mobile Library Service to 5 local communities, based on schools and BPEP Resource Centres. This library has also been designated as a western point of American Centre to provide information services to the local community.

Mid Western Development Region

MAHENDRA LIBRARY

This historic public library was established in 1947 and has already celebrated its golden jubilee. It is housed in its own building in Tribhuwan Chowk and has an impressive collection of over 10,000 volumes. It is the only library in the Nepalgunj Municipality. It was affiliated as the Mid Western Development Regional Library in 1998. This library is now suffering from the problem of fund to pay the salary for the staff.

Far Western Development Region

KAILALI PUBLIC LIBRARY

Far Western Development Region
Dhangadi
This library was established at the initiative of the local people in 1957. The library has its own building. There is a bookstock of 7000 volumes in Nepali, Sanskrit, Hindi and English, and 82 newspapers and magazines are regularly received. It was affiliated to the Nepal National Library as the Far-Western Regional Library in 1998. A monthly programme of talks and discussions with a literary theme is organised.
